WICKED READS BLOG HOP

Welcome to the Wicked Reads Blog Hop and thanks for stopping by mine to check out my page.  Such amazing authors featured on this hop and I am so excited to be among them. This is also my very first blog hop.  Yay!

I have some goodies in store for you today: A chance to win an ebook copy of my latest release, Alpha Blood (Pack Warriors #1).  Be sure to enter my Rafflecopter giveaway belowI also have a little snippet from Alpha Blood Treat, a short bonus story I am writing.  It's all about a Halloween night. This story takes place a few years after Alpha Blood.

So without further ado, here's Alpha Blood Treat.

“I finally got the boys to—” Kane stopped dead in his tracks in the doorway to his bedroom, his words completely failing him due to the sight that greeted him.

Gemma was sprawled out in the center of their king sized bed, wearing nothing but the wolf ears headband she wore earlier as part of her Halloween costume, her lips quirking into a sly little smile at the sight of him.  A goddess, she was bare before him in a lazily relaxed pose.  Her left leg was straight, her right, bent at the knee and spread open, revealing her glistening pink pussy.  Both arms were loosely stretched above her head in a pose that conveyed, come and get me and do to me what you will.  Kane would happily oblige as soon as he was able to get his frozen self to move.

He couldn’t help but marvel at her beauty for a moment more.  She had him tied up in knots all evening with her sexy little wolf outfit, the hilarity of her costume notwithstanding.  The beige, faux-fur trimmed dress hugged her every curve, flaring out at mid thigh, and revealing just enough cleavage to be sexy, yet classy.  That didn’t stop other males from ogling Gemma, something that one angry, possessive look from either Jordan or Kane had them regretting.  Completing her ensemble was the headband she was currently wearing, a tail, and faux fur boots that went almost up to her knee.  Damn, he and Jordan were two of the luckiest sons of bitches.

Sons of bitches who adamantly refused …for as long as they could… to wear any sort of costume.  Kane had learned pretty quickly that he could not refuse Gemma anything that would make her and their three year old boys happy, especially if not giving in would make them unhappy.  So he and Jordan begrudgingly donned last minute, makeshift costumes, which Kane had to also begrudgingly admit, looked pretty bad ass!

He had applied some of Gemma’s Makeup to make himself look like Eric Draven from The Crow—the black eye-liner and dark shadow only, since Gemma did not own any white face paint.  The black leather pants, skin tight black, long sleeved shirt, and black boots were already part of his wardrobe.  He went sans the long black coat because Jordan needed it for his costume.  In addition to Kane’s coat, Jordan wore black slacks, a ribbed black undershirt and black boots with buckles on them.  When he put on his dark aviators, his Neo from The Matrix look was complete.

Gemma squealed with glee when they had surprised her with their costumes.  Both characters were from two of her favorite movies.  “You both look way hotter, though,” she had said.  And from the scent of her arousal, Kane had no doubt she meant it.

“I think you boys deserve a treat later,” Gemma had said with a devilish wink.  She then sauntered off into the family room adding just a little extra sway to her hips.

More coming soon!
In the meantime, check out Alpha Blood (Pack Warriors #1) to see how the trio came together.

Blurb:

Gemma, a she-wolf, alone and in unbearable pain, cries vengeance against the evil man who caused her suffering.  Jordan, alpha of the White-Moon pack, the largest in the country, has a war to prepare for.  Kane, his brother and beta, struggles to be worthy of the role thrust upon him.

When young girls start to disappear and rumors of a dangerous serum surface, the two men are brought face to face with their destiny.  A fiery passion blooms between Gemma and her men, one that heals her body and soul, but a dangerous war still lies ahead.  Will they be successful at stopping an evil tyrant before another girl goes missing or will Gemma pay the ultimate price?  With her life!

Excerpt:

Gemma still ached all over, but the pain was now dull and tolerable. She knew her reprieve would be short. More pain waited for her throughout the night. Something was different, however. Warmth surrounded her on both sides as she rested on what felt like a soft bed. A pillow cushioned her head.
She opened her eyes and bolted upright when a warm, calloused hand brushed her cheek.
“Easy, you’re safe,” said a deeply rich and sexy voice. “Lie back down.”
She looked around the spacious bedroom and even through the muted light could see the room was tastefully decorated with dark wood furniture matching the dark wood bedposts. A creamy white chaise sat in the corner with a cozy-looking rich brown throw blanket dangling off the side of it. She imagined herself lounging on it with a good book and a glass of wine sitting atop the small side table next to the chaise. Gemma did in fact feel safe, safer than she had felt in a very long time. She complied with the gentle command to lie down, pulling up the chartreuse-colored sheet that had pooled around her belly when she had sat up and she sensed a blush creep onto her cheeks while doing so. The memory of what had happened earlier in the forest with the two gorgeous men beside her came flooding back to her as well. They had given her a ray of hope when she had none left.
At first she was on her guard, wary of anyone who dared approach her lest they were part of Pollux-Moon or in allegiance with them. Then she became angry that two complete strangers thought it their right to order her around, to touch her without her consent. She’d been in too much pain to realize that they only wanted to help her. So in agony and unfocused as she was, at first she hadn’t even realized that they were her mates.
Mates. I have mates. She closed her eyes briefly and savored the delicious scents that surrounded her. Her pain had been reflected in their eyes earlier when she had locked gazes with them after she realized who they were to her. One of them had hair the color of midnight and eyes of gold. His hard gaze had softened when she stopped struggling and let him examine her. She found him looking at her when she opened her eyes again.
“What’s your name?” he asked. He had a slightly deeper baritone than the one who commanded her to lie down.
“I’m Gemma. But my friends call me Gem.”
“You have a beautiful name, Gemma, Gem.” His smile was breathtaking. He looked so open and friendly, a complete contrast to how he had looked earlier when he was being bossy and commanding. “I’m Jordan. Alpha of the White-Moon pack. This is my brother and beta, Kane.”
She looked over at Kane—hair nearly as dark as his brother’s, but eyes a mossy green—and managed a small smile. Both men were large and muscular and exuded a power hard to miss. They had identical tattoos on their left pectoral—a wolf’s paw print with a wolf face inside it. The eyes of each wolf, however, matched its owner’s. A full white moon stood out behind the paw and the White-Moon pack insignia, in elegant script, rested underneath. They both sported various other tattoos, but that particular one was breathtaking.
“You had us worried there, little wolf,” Kane said. “How are you feeling?”
“Like I just clawed my way out of hell for a temporary breather.” She hadn’t meant to say that out loud.
Kane looked suddenly angry. “Who did this to you?”

Thanks again for stopping by and HAPPY HALLOWEEN.  May you all get lots of special treats this year.  ;)

FFB Teaser - you don't want
Far from Blind Excerpt: He closed the door behind them and the distinct click of a lock tumbling over echoed around the room. Maybe no showing yesterday was a mistake. If they’d had any chance at all, she’d blown it for sure. How could she expect him to trust her now? The air, thick with unsaid words, closed in around her. It was time to take care of business and escape before she embarrassed herself. “This must be for you.” She held out the envelope. “Thank you.” He took it from her and tore it open, revealing a piece of paper. His cheeks pulled into a little smile, then it disappeared. He maneuvered around his desk and sat. “Do you like me, Candy?” “Of course I do.” She clasped her arms around her middle. The bigger question is what he thought of her before Club Blind and now. “Then why didn’t you show last night?” He pressed his lips together and kept his gaze on her. “To be honest…” “That’s all I’ll ever expect from you.” “I’ll give it to you straight. You don’t want a girl like me.” She blew out a breath as if it could help her raging pulse. Never in a million years would she have guessed she’d want a man to tell her she was wrong. “Is that what you believe?” “Yes.” She kept her focus on him. He gave nothing away. His expression didn’t change, only his fingers tapped on his desk which was irritatingly neat. “Then we have a problem.” He stood. “We’d agreed to meet. I kept up my end.” “And I didn’t.” She blew out a deep breath. “Come here.” She didn’t move. She didn’t take her next breath either. He pointed to the ground in front of him. “Don’t make me ask twice.” She jumped and then slipped around his desk. Damn, he really did smell good. No matter whether it was aftershave or him, the deep woodsy scent turned here on. Everything about Brad turned her on. “Did I ask you to join me at Mistress Charlie’s yesterday?” “Yes, but—” “Do you believe I’m a liar?” “No.” “I don’t think you are either.” He tapped under her chin, lifting her focus back to him. “But I don’t believe you’re being honest with me right now and that’s a problem.” “I’m sorry I didn’t show yesterday.” “I appreciate the admission, but I can’t let the action and the attitude go unpunished.” “What, are you going to spank me?” She chuckled. “I think it’s time.” He tucked some of her hair behind her ear and his touch lingered along the side of her neck over her ugly mole. “Don’t you agree?” “Agreed, Sir.” She leaned back on his desk. It was the only thing holding her up. “Safeword?” “Red.” “Very good. Bend over my desk, please.” “Right here?” She looked around his office. She didn’t find any windows to the hall, but his windows facing the next building were wide open. “You really are pissed.” The corner of his lips lifted slightly. “The windows are treated. No one can see in here.” “Oh.” “You’re stalling.” “Can you blame me?” “You do know I’m an accountant, right?” He tugged on her hair. “We like to add.”

GUEST BLOGGER KELSIE BELLE WITH THE GUEST

Please welcome my guest blogger today Kelsie Belle with her newest release THE GUEST.

Synopsis ~ The Guest

School teacher, Julianne Matthews, has been married to her own real life Prince Charming, the hunky Jared Matthews, for over a year and they couldn’t be happier. That is, until Jared invites his old college buddy, Cole Richardson, to be a guest in their home for the weekend. Cole is a wealthy investment banker from out of state and has been toying with the idea of going into business with Jared for some time. The weekend was supposed to be all about sorting out the details of that business but when these three get into a room together for the first time, the chemistry among them is something none of them had planned for. Julie realizes that she’s just as attracted to Cole as she is to her husband and would like nothing more than to be sandwiched between the two hot men in bed. However, she knows that will probably never happen and feels completely guilty for even thinking about it. Imagine her surprise when she finds out that neither man finds the idea repulsive in any way and that they had both been having similar thoughts all along. What will become of Julie’s perfect marriage when her husband’s house guest gets invited into their bedroom?

Teaser
Julie Matthews had one of the most wonderful husbands a girl could ever ask for. Jared was a man whom she knew many of her friends envied her for. Good looking, caring, attentive and great in bed, he was the perfect package—there was absolutely no need for her to have a wandering eye.
But his college buddy, Cole Richardson, was something else entirely. He was simply beautiful, with a face any male model would die for and the kind of rangy frame that alluded to subtle yet potent strength. Where Jared was light, Cole was dark. Where Jared was thick and ropey, Cole was lean and sinewy. The two men had very little in common physically, yet she was just a drawn to Cole as she had been to Jared when they had just met. It was crazy, but right off the bat, she’d found herself wondering what kind of lover Cole would be—the gentle, attentive kind who liked to take things slow and easy or the fiercer, more intense kind who would want to break her to his will?
Then a totally unexpected thought sprang into her mind. What would it be like to have both men, so very different yet so alike, attending to her every sexual need at the same time? Each one loving her, worshipping her body in his own unique way. She could imagine it now—heaven on earth, bliss beyond her wildest dreams. She’d probably come a thousand times in that one eventful night, as her senses were inundated with pleasures untold.

Excerpt
“So did you have a good time with Jules today?” Jared’s voice broke into his musing and almost made him jump. If he didn’t know better, he would have thought the guy could read his damn mind.
“Ah, it was great. She showed me the place you chose—good choice by the way—and we had some lunch and got to know each other a little better.”
Jared nodded, taking a quick swig of his beer. “Good, good. I was hoping you would.”
“Would what?”
“Get to know each other better.”
A slight feeling of discomfiture began creeping up Cole’s spine at the line of conversation. He cleared his throat in an attempt to ease some of it. “Um … yeah, we did.”
“And what did you think?”
Cole’s brows furrowed in perplexity. “Ah, I already told you, the place is perfect. When I get back I’m going to finish up the paperwork and you can look out for the first installment of the funds in your account by Friday.”
Jared grinned. “That’s great news buddy, thank you. But that’s not what I meant.”
“What did you mean then?”
“I meant what did you think of Julie?”
Silence settled between them for a long moment as Cole assessed the question his friend had asked him. He took a drink from his bottle to buy a little more time before responding. “Well I, ah, I think she’s a wonderful woman. Obviously gorgeous, but also intelligent and witty. It was pretty easy being in her company.”
“So in other words she makes your cock hard.” Jared’s words were low and flat, but the cheeky grin he gave Cole made them almost amusing.
Cole laughed softly, shaking his head in exasperation. “Relax, Matthews. I’m not trying to poach your wife.”
Jared shrugged and took a swig of his beer. “Never said you were.”
More silence followed. Cole’s uneasiness increased and he chugged down some more beer in an attempt to quell it. Where the hell was Jared going with this?
“Do you remember Natasha Prendergast?” The question brought Cole up short—Natasha was a girl they’d both liked during college and had ended up having their first threesome with. Well, it had been Jared’s first. Cole had done it a time or two before that and he’d been the one to suggest they try it. But how had the conversation gotten here? They hadn’t even spoken about that in years. He was so busy trying to connect the dots that it took him a moment to reply.
“Of course I do. How could I forget?” he said.
“Yeah, that was some night, huh?” Jared said, cocking a brow at him.
“It was.”
“Ever thought about doing that sort of thing again?”
Cole’s brows furrowed. Okay. He hadn’t seen that one coming. “Uh, well, you’re assuming I haven’t.”
Jared’s bark of laughter was loud enough to be heard over the other noisy patrons and the games playing on the screens above their heads. “Touché. Well I haven’t, that’s for sure. Not that I didn’t want to, but that’s not the sort of thing you do with just anybody, you know?”
“Agreed. And for the record, I haven’t either. I was just messing with you.”
Jared placed his now empty beer bottle on the counter and beckoned to the waitress to bring another round before he spoke again. “So it’s not something you would do again then?”
Cole inclined his head and studied the other man, slowly beginning to see where this was going. He shuffled in his seat as the discomfiture from earlier on began to dissipate and was slowly replaced by a subtle excitement. If Jared was even contemplating what he was thinking, then he certainly had something to be excited about. In an effort to play it cool though, he waited until the waiter had brought their drinks before he gave his response.
“I’d definitely love to do it again.”
Jared nodded but didn’t say anything. He just stared at the beer bottle in his hand contemplatively. Finally his friend looked up at him, a similar excitement brewing in his emerald eyes. “I’d love to do it again too.”
“Yeah?”
“Oh yeah.”
Another long, deafening silence ensued. Cole had already read between the lines and he couldn’t stop the surge of anticipation that rose in his gut at the thought. But he wanted to make sure he wasn’t jumping to the wrong conclusion. He wanted to hear Jared say the words. Looking pointedly at the other man, he asked, “So what are you saying?”
Jared’s gaze met his as he replied, “I’m saying, Cole, that I would love to share my wife with you.”
Cole’s breath hitched as the potent words slammed into him, going straight to his cock. He expelled a harsh breath he hadn’t even realized he was holding, but he was more than a little happy to know he’d been correct in his assumption. “Damn! And here I’ve been praying all night that you couldn’t tell how badly she’s been plaguing my mind.”
Jared chuckled, his face lighting up with mirth. “Didn’t take a psychic to see that you were into her, my man. Or maybe it’s because I know how you operate.”
“Maybe. But tell me this, how do you know she’ll be into it? You guys have obviously never done anything like that.”
“No, but I can tell she’s into you, too, and she has a very open mind when it comes to sex.”
“I see.” Cole nodded, playing with the rim of his bottle for a moment while he contemplated the situation. Finally, he asked, “So would you just come right out and tell her that’s what we want to do?”
That’s what they’d done with Natasha and it turned out she was just as game as they were. But Julie, now she might be a whole different kettle of fish. If Jared was wrong and she wasn’t okay with it, then it could make the situation extremely uncomfortable for them all.
“No, I don’t think so. I think the best way to handle Julie is to show her what we want to do with her.”

Adult Excerpt
She licked her lips, then slowly shook her head. “N-no. I don’t mind at all.”
“Good,” Jared said with a smile. He walked over to her, cupped one breast and squeezed it gently. “Lie back for me, sweetheart.”
Julie hurried to obey him, lowering herself to the table again. Jared’s head followed her down, his mouth closing over her nipple and began go lick and suck the firm bud. At the same time, Cole rose from his knees and his hand replaced his head between her legs. Sensation exploded inside her as one masterful mouth pleasured her breasts, and a talented hand rubbed over her clit, delving into her hot hole with every pass. Neither man stopped his sweet ministration until she was moaning and writhing on top of the table in the throes of passion.
Then Cole was holding her legs apart, fitting his hips between them so he could align his long, thick cock at her entrance. Her pussy clenched in anticipation, and she sucked in her breath as she waited for him to slide into her already sopping channel. “Are you ready for me, baby?” he whispered and she swore she would come just at the harsh sound of his need-laced voice.
“Yes… I’m ready.” She fairly groaned the words.
Without further delay, Cole rocked his hips forward, sinking his cock into her pussy. Inch by inch, he slowly pushed into her, stretching her tight walls until finally he was fully seated inside her. Her pussy convulsed around him, adjusting to his size and he groaned. “Oh damn, you’re a snug fit.”
Then he began to move, thrusting into her with a gentle rocking of his hips. Julie cried out, loving the feel of his cock working her pussy so skillfully. At the same time, Jared released her breasts and stood, moving his hips closer to her face so that his cock was in line with her mouth. She turned her head to the side and parted her lips, allowing him to ease his massive member between them. Knowing exactly how to please him, she began to suck on the wide head of his cock, sliding her tongue over it as she did so.
He sank his fingers into her hair, holding her head steady so he could gently pump into her mouth. She hollowed out her cheeks, creating a rhythmic suction that she knew would drive him crazy as his cock went deeper and deeper into her mouth. “That’s it baby, suck my cock. Shit!” he cried.
She moaned around the cock in her mouth as Cole changed his angle between her legs and increased the pace of his thrusts. The head of his cock was now hitting the sweet spot inside her just right, making her pussy clamp down on his length, sucking him deeper into her slickness just as her mouth was sucking Jared in.
“God damn, Julie, your pussy feels so fucking good!” Cole cried and his harsh words pushed her over the edge. Her climax hit her like a bolt of lightning, shaking her to the core, so much so that Jared’s cock slipped out of her mouth. She screamed loudly with her release, even as Cole’s body stiffened between her legs, her climax triggering his own. Then his hot cum was spilling into her pussy, and she was convulsing beneath him as her own cream rushed out onto his cock. Jared held her and stroked her hair, soothing her as the final tremors rocked her. When Cole finally pulled out of her, she was limp and spent in Jared’s arms.

GUEST BLOGGER REBECCA BLACK WITH LET'S RIDE

Please welcome my guest blogger today, the very talented Rebecca Black with her newest release, Let's Ride.

Hello!
Thanks for having me today so I can give my new book Let’s Ride a shout out.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I really love a good, quick read. Busy lives often don’t leave as much time as we’d like for reading, do they? I’m not always so bothered about the backstory, I just want to live vicariously for a moment through the characters as they experience that first rush of lust and desire in a new relationship - I want to get a little hot and tingly ;)
Well Evernight’s Romance on the Go range is all about fulfilling this reading need and my new release Let’s Ride is a part of that.

Let’s Ride started life as an erotic short that I wrote for Masturbation Monday (a meme that I write for most weeks). I saw a black and white photograph of this gorgeous, androgynous woman sat on a kick ass motorbike in just a pair of knickers and this piece of flash fiction just fired out of me. Talk about inspiration!
She looked like she wouldn’t take any crap and she looked very capable of sweeping someone off their feet. It got a lot of great feedback so I decided to extend it and lucky for me, Evernight liked it too.
I’ve read some great books with well written dominant male characters, both straight and gay, but I really wanted to write a recognisable archetype with a twist. There isn’t one good reason on this earth why the hero has to be male. Let’s Ride completely rejects that assumption. Jo is confident, self-assured and has a dominant streak a mile wide, but she’s also a beautiful woman, inside and out. She rides into town and sweeps Mary-Beth right off her feet and into her bed. I love her (I know I’m not supposed to say that because I wrote her, but I really do!) and I hope you do too.

So here’s the blurb:
“I would do just about anything to be on the back of that bike when she leaves this place.”
Trapped in a small town life, Mary-Beth always knew there was something better out there. Then Jo rides into town and walks straight into the diner where she works. Sexy, dominant and self-assured, Jo is everything Mary-Beth wishes she could be. Their hot, intense meeting crashes through Mary-Beth’s small world and offers her the promise of a new start.
Will Mary-Beth leave everything behind and ride with Jo towards the chance of a new life?
Excerpt:
Standing by the window, I’m trying to take a lunch time customer’s order but my attention is caught by a bike riding into the gas pump out front.
I hold my breath. She is pretty much everything that I wish I could be. Tall and lean. Enough fuck you attitude to tame a horde of marauding Vikings. She straddles that bike like she was born to it, like she never rode a trike. Like she just stepped right onto all that horsepower and with a flick of her wrists rode off into the sunset, giving everyone the finger as she went.
I would do just about anything to be on the back of that bike when she leaves this place.
She kicks the stand and moves the bike smoothly into its stationary position, slinging her long leg over the back wheel.
I jump a little when our eyes meet through the window. I’m supposed to be taking this guy’s order but I got distracted, seriously distracted. She smirks when her eyes roam over the redness in my cheeks.
Heat has suffused my body; a fine sweat has broken out on my skin and I know I’m in trouble. So much trouble.
I manage to scramble my brain sufficiently to take his order and drop it off at the kitchen. Moving around the bar, I grab the coffee pot to do refills. I can’t stop looking at the door.
Will she come in? Or has she just come for gas?
Please let her come in.
I want to see her up close—I want to see her eyes—that flawless skin. I want to run my fingers over the black shaved hair on the sides of her head, run them through the longer top that she has greased back. I want to watch her eyes close with the pleasure of it.
I hold my nerve when I hear the bell ring over the door. I’m pouring coffee—it really wouldn’t do to spill it and burn a customer. I’m bent over slightly to reach the cup, and my skirt brushes against the back of my legs when she walks past me.
I smile distractedly as the customer thanks me, turning my head to see she has taken a seat at the bar.
Walking over on shaky legs, I smooth my damp palms down the front of my uniform apron.
She sits tall, resting her elbows on the counter. Her legs are open, one heel of her heavy black boots hooked higher on the stool than the other. Her jeans are tight, riding low on slim hips, well worn with a small rip over one knee. A tight white t-shirt stops a few inches from the waistband of her jeans, showing smooth lightly tanned skin that I desperately want to touch.
Her knowing gaze follows me as I move around the bar to face her. I can almost feel a pressure on my skin where it touches me.
“What can I get for you?”
“What have you got?” she asks in a low, husky voice. Her eyes lock on mine. Her eyebrows are like a raven’s wings, perfectly shaped, drawing my attention across her arresting face.
“Pretty much anything, as long as it’s deep fried and unhealthy,” I say wryly.
She laughs. The sound is low and rough and strokes over my nipples.
“Always tastes good, though, don’t it?” she replies. That smirk plays across her mouth again as her gaze drops to my lips. “I’ll just take a coffee for now. Think I’ll get something sweet in a little while…”

GUEST BLOGGER MICHELLE ROTH WITH BITE ME

Please welcome my guest blogger today, the very talented Michelle Roth with her newest release, BITE ME.

Hi there, everyone! I'm Michelle Roth and I'm here to introduce my latest release, Bite Me. It's the second in my vampire paranormal series, The Transfigured Ones. Magnus Corbett, my hero, was modeled a bit after Gordon Ramsey. I wanted him to be a rough around the edges guy who didn't necessarily have time for love. I knew, whoever I matched him with would either need to be a bad ass chick who didn't take any crap.. or she'd need to be so sweet that she called to the softer side of him. Caroline Lundquist is both of those things.
If you've got any questions about the book, for me as the author, or about the series in general, feel free to use the #transfiguredones hash tag and I'll do my best to answer!
BiteMe-EvernightPublishing-JayAheer2015-smallpreview
Magnus Corbett is the world renowned head chef for Usquebaugh, the wildly popular restaurant and whiskey bar inside the Foxwood Hotel and Casino. He's certain that it was his status as one of the Transfigured that put him on the map. It will be bold flavors and his tireless work ethic that keep him there. And, if he has to be a little blunt to get things done? So be it.
When bar manager, Caroline Lundquist, develops a line of cocktails to breathe some life into the drink menu, she's determined to have new gin-inspired dishes to pair with them. During their collaboration she finds herself falling for the side of Magnus that people rarely see. He's sweet. Compassionate. Caring. As they begin to navigate the perils of a vampire-human relationship, both of their pasts crop up, threatening to destroy everything they're working so hard to build together.

I don't get much, but I prefer to fiddle in the kitchen or read a book. I deal with people day in and day out, so when it comes to my downtime, I can be a bit selfish.
  2. What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? How about after they’ve known you for a while? I've lived a long time. If I expend any time or energy on someone, I tend to expect a lot. I try to weed out the assholes, liars, and other bad apples. People probably find that incredibly abrasive. In the end, once I feel like I can trust someone, they know that I'm loyal. My own family kind of checked out on me, so I sort of make my own.
  3. What’s your idea of a good marriage? Do you think that’ll happen in your life? I grew up in a typical stodgy British home. I doubt my parents even liked each other, let alone loved each other. I haven't a clue what makes a good marriage. I'd hold on to it tightly if I ever thought I found it, though.
  4. What are you most proud of about your life? I'm a world renowned chef. I can work anywhere I choose. I did that in spite of this being a non-Transfigured dominated industry.
- And what about something more personal? Living your dream? Making something out of nothing? How is that not personal? Did you write these bloody questions?
- Why is that so meaningful to you? I did it completely on my own. My family kicked me when I was seventeen. I managed to finish high school and go to culinary school on my own. There was no silver spoon or college fund. I did it on my own.
  1. What are you most ashamed of in your life? I could have been nicer to people, looking back. I don't always have to be so abrupt. I find it easier, though. I definitely could have been nicer.
  2. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick? Auguste Escoffier. The man was bloody brilliant. I'd love to sit down and pick his brain.
  3. Do you think you’ve turned out the way your parents expected?
I don't think they had much hope for me. They pretty much checked out of my life when they found out I was Transfigured. Then they fought for the next decade or so about who had the faulty genetics. I don't think they thought much about me at all. I'd love to say I didn't think of them, but it would be a lie. I do. And it's not kindly.
  4. What do you believe about God? What do you suppose God thinks of you?
There's a lot of pain and suffering in the world. People get sick. People lose loved ones to horrible accidents. Meanwhile, there are some of us who live forever whether we want to or not. It doesn't seem fair. I'm not sure a kind and loving god would do something like that.
  5. Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t done? What would happen if you did it? It's been roughly forty years since I've been to the beach during the day. I'd love to do that but it would destroy my skin and eventually kill me. Painful.
  6. What’s the worst thing that’s happened in your life? What did you learn from it?
I'd probably say that my family is the worst thing to happen to me. What kind of awful parents withhold love from a child because of a genetic defect they can't control? No matter whether my children are Transfigured or not, I'd love them. That's what I learned, I guess. Tolerance.
  7. Tell me about your best friend. Veronica is my best friend and my sous chef. She's probably one of the few people who puts up with my crap. I trust her implicitly. She's probably the closest thing that I have to a sister.
  8. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to someone? Why? Despite the fact I'm a bit of a prick sometimes, I don't intentionally hurt people. I've had to fire a few wayward souls, but that's about it. They either stole, lied, or didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground.
  9. What would you like it to say on your tombstone? Since we pretty much just turn to a pile of ash, a tombstone seems a bit much.
  10. Describe your ideal mate. She'd need to be strong. Someone who didn't take any of my garbage. She'd have to be engaging. A good conversationalist. Well read. Smart. Funny. Beautiful wouldn't hurt but it's not a prerequisite. Not a bloody stick figure. She'd need to enjoy eating, because I would enjoy cooking for her. Taking care of her in that way.
  11. What are you most afraid of? Failure. Being alone for eternity. The usual suspects.
  12. What’s the most important thing in your life? What do you value most?
My space. I can only handle so much social interaction, so having my personal space is hugely important. I feel like, with time alone, I recharge.
  13. What do you like best about yourself? Least? I'm driven to succeed. I prefer to be solitary most of the time. I know that's not exactly healthy.
  14. How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change?
I've got a good life, for the most part. I'm happy with my career. I'd like to find someone to settle down with, though.
  15. Are you lying to yourself about something? What is it?
There's a part of me that wishes that I wasn't so solitary, that wants to be outgoing and friendly. I want to be social, and happy go lucky. I just don't trust people.
  16. What trait do you most deplore in others?
People who lack common sense. Critical thinking skills are important in life, and there are people who don't develop them or refuse to. Drives me bloody mad!

Excerpt:
"I'm sorry to bring you from your home, Master Nakai, but there are concerns in the town with regards to the Xyran."
"His name is Sukh, and he's my bondmate. I would request that you remember this and address him accordingly." Nakai drew himself to his full height, giving him a couple of inches over Pimne.
"But of course, Master Nakai." Pimne gave a forced smile and acquiesced immediately.
This was hardly what Nakai expected. However, on seeing how quickly Pimne had backed down, Nakai decided to go on the offensive. "Giving consideration to the fact that Sukh has never come into town, except in my company, I truly wonder what concern there can be."
Trying to regain control of the situation, Pimne tried to mimic Nakai and also drew himself up tall. “Master Nakai, as town Magistrate I have to ensure all is in order within our community.”
“Of that I have no doubt, Master Pimne." Nakai inclined his head. "But I'm at a loss to know why anything should be levied against my mate, who is always at my side."
"Master Tokala has expressed concerns."
Now things made sense. At least a little. Tokala was new to the town and seemingly as determined as Pimne to consolidate a position of political power. Nakai instantly decided that Tokala was not going to use Sukh to gain status in the town.
"I see. However, it seems to me that perhaps the … issue surrounding my mate owes more to Master Tokala’s view of Xyrans, or even his political aspirations, rather than to of my fellow townspeople who have said nothing to me, your predecessor who only retired so recently, or our incumbent Mayor.”
"Master Tokala feels that to see a Xyran, unleashed, walking our streets, is distressing to our women and children."
At the furious look Nakai aimed at him, Pimne looked even less assured, and Nakai decided to press his advantage.
"Indeed? Then why have I not heard it from mates and parents? As I understand it, Master Tokala is newly settled in our town. I doubt that my bondmates and I have been in town more than twice in that time. Who is complaining to him? And why? He isn't the Magistrate. You are. Nor is he Mayor. Although I have heard rumor he intends to stand. I ask again, is this related to his, shall we say, political aspirations?"
The obvious loss of color to Pimne's cheeks told Nakai all he needed to know. It didn't surprise Nakai that Pimne probably thought of him as a country bumpkin. Since taking Sukh and Einian as his mates, there was almost no reason for Nakai to leave the comfort of his home and estate. Prior to that he either managed his estate or did his military service. He'd never made a point of being vocal in the town's political arena.
Maybe it was time that he was.
"I—I assure you, Master Nakai, that I wouldn't be party to any such—such a situation."
A deep sense of satisfaction rolled over Nakai as Pimne looked positively green. If Pimne had done his homework better, he would have realized that Nakai would be not be impressed by the Magistrate's own social status, nor would he be a pushover. Tokala may have wealth, but Nakai was quite sure that his own personal prosperity, even when not combined with that of his brothers, made him one of the wealthiest residents of the town.
He had affluence, social standing, and he was still an officer of the Alphan fleet. Nakai's request to leave the service had been met with one that he remain on active service only to be called upon in an emergency. He'd block Tokala in every way possible. He inclined his head at Pimne.
“I would be very interested to know exactly who feels the need to discuss anything of such an intimate nature with such a comparative newcomer to the town.” Nakai flicked imaginary lint from the sleeve of his jacket. “As I’m sure you’ve discovered for yourself, Master Pimne, the townsfolk take time to adjust to someone from outside. Nothing personal is meant, but we are a small and intimate town. Which naturally makes me very concerned no one has approached me. After all, I’m very well respected within our community.”
Although it wasn’t normally in Nakai’s nature to make someone feel small, he was so angry over Sukh that he fully intended to make Pimne deliberately uncomfortable. And his strategy was working.
“Let me get you some wine. I believe this is one of your own vintages.” Pimne hurried away to pour a couple of drinks.
Settling back in his chair, Nakai allowed himself a slow smile. By the time he was finished here, the Magistrate would have turned a full one hundred and eighty degrees. He’d also make certain to find out a lot more about Tokala. Some Alphans retained a dislike of Xyrans, and always would. Their worlds remained in opposition, and Xyrans were enemies, after all.
A thought struck him, and Nakai sat up a little straighter. He wasn't even certain he'd come into town with Sukh since Tokala's recent arrival in town. In fact, now that the realization had come to him, he was certain that in the last few months he and his mates had remained on the estate. The town had little to entice them to visit.
The more Nakai thought about it, the more Tokala seemed to bear careful investigation.
